Mrs. Palmer...

My fifth grade teacher in 1984. What a wonderful and spunky woman. You were my most memorable teacher and I will always remember you fondly. Thank you for that great year of elementary school! Rest in peace...

For my brother and I, "Aunt" Sylvia and her family were always near in spirit and treasured on visits, from our very earliest memories of growing up in the 1950s. A dear friend of our mother's, Sylvia was always a thoughtful, caring and uplifting presence. She was a source of inspiration about the wideness of the world, and about the importance of kindness and a positive outlook. Our circles are diminished with Sylvia's departure; she was among the greatest of her and our parents' generation. She set an example with her life that I will forever remember and deeply respect.

Sincere condolences to Stevie and Patricia and their families.

The front pool at the Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center is going to be a lonelier place without Sylvia's hugs and without her conversation while walking laps. It is a privilege to have known her.

I am at a loss for words and heartbroken. Mrs. Palmer was my 5th grade teacher. As I became an adult I thought of her as my second mom. She was always there for me with wise words and support. When I lost my mom she attended her funeral. She held me and cried with me. She always asked about my children (not kids!). She would send me cards and books. We would visit for an hour and I hung on her every word. I will miss you Mrs. Palmer. I love you and thank you for all your kindness and your friendship. May you rest in God's Peace. I hope you know how much your're loved.

I was Blessed in knowing Sylvia for over 20 years. I was her Hair stylist for about five of those years. Sylvia came in every week looking forward to not just getting beautiful, but looked forward to joining in a song with the other ladies that were in the Salon. Great memories! Sylvia always had a cheerful greeting & farewell while being escorted by her sweet German Shepard,” Sage”.
Sage never left her side while getting her hair fixed.
A very dignified, determined & knowledgeable Lady. Loaded with lots of wisdom & Love.
I will always & forever be grateful to have known Ms.Sylvia.
Till we meet again Lovely Lady! ❤️✝️

To our special Miss Wilvia, such a beautiful lady full of grace and blessings for all. I never heard her speak an unkind word to or about another person. What a wonderful example for all of us.

A great example of our Eastern Star principles and lessons. I will always remember and respect your ability to "just keep going" when you know you have forgotten a word or two of your Rainbow or Eastern Star part.

You will be sorely missed but always remembered with love and respect.

Mrs.Palmer was my favorite teacher. She was also the strictest teacher I ever had, but she always did so in such a loving and positive way.I've enjoyed exchanging yearly Christmas cards with her and seeing the great pictures of her and her family. She was truly a beautiful woman inside and out. She was such a great example to me. She will be greatly missed. It was a blessing to know and love her.

I languished in finding all the right words... then the form went blank. So let me offer a piece of one of her favorite poems instead:

"... And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of god."

High Flight John G Magee Jr.

I know she's there, and I hope I was able to convey in these 52 years of friendship how much I loved her.

I have known Sylvia Palmer since 1967. I joined Bainbridge Chapter OES..She was the kindest person in the whole world. She always asked how our kids were doing. She was always for children and supported them. She spent many hours with Rainbow Girls and Job's Daughters. When my husband became a Mason and a Past Master she greated him with a hug and asked how the young Past Master was doing. In 1995 I was W.M. at Bainbridge Chapter and Sylvia was my Worthy Grand Matron for the State of WA. She will be missed, but she is in God's Hands still making sure we are doing ok.
We will miss her and love her until we meet again.

Mrs Sylvia Palmer holds a very special place in my heart. What a powerhouse in so many ways. A brilliant mind, coupled with confidence, warmth, love of all people and so much character. I grew up on Bainbridge Island with Sylvia and Rodney as a extension of our family. I have so many found memories of visiting their home, Eastern Star events and just recently received a surprise package with a beautiful note and the Entertainer sheet music I used to play at my Mom and Dad’s Star Matron and Patron Initiation (circa late 70s.early 80s). May you Rest In Peace and always know how many lives you’ve touched for the better. I LOVE YOU!!

Mrs. Palmer was my absolute favorite teacher ever, but she was so much more than that. She was one of my favorite people ever, one of my best role models and always a ray of sunshine. If ever I was feeling down, she always had a kind and encouraging word. She was a class act and I have such admiration for the way she lived her life. I am so glad I was able to stop and visit her a couple of months ago, but I am deeply sad that I won't be able to do so again. And no more cheery notes in her lovely loopy handwriting. I will always love her! #15

Mrs Palmer’s mix of love and rules made her a beloved teacher for all of us who were lucky enough to be her students!! She left a lasting impact and gave us wonderful childhood memories. Even though I spent my fair share of time sitting next to her desk (I liked to chat a bit too much!!) she was one of my favorites for sure and will be missed!

Sylvia made a huge impact on my life as a teacher. I did my September Experience in her classroom in 1973. I recognized then that her passion, her style, and her love of students was something I wanted to emulate. We kept in touch for over 40 years. I last saw her after she had a hip replacement. During our visit she continued to encourage me. She was one in a million and a true blessing. I love you, Mrs. Palmer.

Mrs. Palmer,

You were my safe place-and the reason I became a teacher. Kids are baby goats, and it’s “yes” not “yeah”. For the poems and stars and bars. For walking me over to the middle school to meet my 6th grade teacher. For the Christmas cards we exchanged every year. You made the world a better place. You inspired me and so many others. You will be greatly missed and forever remembered.

With love,

The world has lost an amazing human with a heart of gold. I have known Sylvia, aka Mrs. Palmer, since I was in 5th grade and she was my teacher.

My favorite teacher.
Ever.

Decades later when we crossed paths, her memory was still as sharp as the days when she was teaching us how to recite Robert Frost, and her hugs were still as warm and welcomed as ever. Sylvia was a role model for me and laid the foundation for how important education and continued learning would be in my life. I am so very thankful to have known her and to have been inspired by her teaching...words cannot even express how much.

I hope heaven is waiting with a "Star and a Bar" for a life of service well lived.

Sylvia was a wonderfully strong person. Her deep faith and warm spirit always brought me encouragement. She would always bring my staff and I a yummy baked treat or card. It was always a highlight of my day to see her and get a big hug and kiss on the cheek. Every time she would leave she would tell us she loved us. I hope some day to be half the woman she was. I know her Savior in heaven rejoiced the day she arrived. She will be missed.

My brothers have so eloquently spoken of Sylvia here (AKA “Sailboat” – I think that may have started with Neil). I echo their sentiments and feel the loss as another extended family member. Sylvia came to my daughter and son-in-law’s bridal/groom shower last spring. In one of the games at the party, we had names stuck to our backs and we had to try to guess our own identity. I ended up being Mark Antony and Sylvia was Cleopatra. What an honor! Just a few weeks ago, she called me to let me know that she had a tree down on her property, and knew that we gathered wood for our woodstove. She was always thinking of others, and always greeted with not just a “hello, my love,” but with a kiss on the cheek and a warm hug. We will miss your presence in our lives, but will never miss your hand in helping us understand the value of true friendship.

I was introduced to Miss Sylvia when she was looking for someone to take care of her garden at her home shortly after her husband Rodney passed. Through the years she became like a grandmother to me and a significant mentor as well. I always looked forward to a day at Sylvia's, which consisted of a friendly greeting by her doggies sage and later chia and that warm smiling face of miss Sylvia every time i came to visit. We had so many good talks and she always sent me home with something. (cookies, muffins, the paper for my husband, an outfit for my new baby or even a clipping of an article that made her think of me). I am so truly blessed to have known her. You will be deeply missed my friend. Thank you for all the wonderful memories. I will cherish them forever.

Even when times were at my lowest, Sylvia was always my champion. I don't miss her because she will always live within me. Stevie and Patricia, I join in your sorrow.

Sylvia was a beautiful woman, inside and outside, and in word and deed. I had the privilege of knowing her for many years and teaching with her at Poulsbo Elementary School. She was always kind and loving. Whenever we saw each other after retirement, she always greeted me lovingly. I will always remember her saying “Right will prevail!” She and her husband, Rodney, were a strikingly good looking couple and real head turners! Sylvia will be sorely missed but lovingly remembered. Our heartfelt condolences to her family.
