Thank you to everyone that enriched my mothers life by your friendship and love. She would like to thank you all for being who you are and memories you gave. Her spirit will always live on Bainbridge Island which she loved very much. I would also like to thank the Cook's for making this difficult time bearable.

When our family moved to Bainbridge Island 30 years ago we soon had the privilege to meet Nancy. From that point on she shaped our lives forever. The neverending all afternoon lessons right up until it was dark. The wealth of information she fed into both Dawn and myself was priceless. Without her our family would not be the same and the horse community on B.I. definitely would not be what it is today. Her patience and gentle way with the kids taught them lifelong lessons outside of the arena. Her legacy lives on thru many adults, their children and grandchildren. I thank Nancy for the lifelong lessons and skills she taught all her students on horseback and off.
The thousands of hours she spent with Dawn instilling high standards, good sportsmanship, safety and respect for both others and horses gave my daughter and many other girls the tools to grow into the women they are today. She is a true friend to all who had the privilege to know such a wonderful women. Nancy you will always be in my heart. And now when I watch my grand girls jump I know you will there with them sitting on their shoulders like an angel. I love you Nancy.

Nancy has been a part of my life since I was about 14 years of age. I was one of the original charter members of Pony Club she was instrumental in forming. Many years later, she would teach my daughter to ride, and she won many blue ribbons! She was always ready with a smile and a laugh. I was fortunate to have her over for lunch this last June, and we talked about her illness. She was very brave and forward looking, but was thankful for the wonderful oportunities she had enjoyed in life. I will miss her always, yet she remains a part of me.

We had the pleasure of knowing Nancy for almost ten years. She was a great neighbor and friend with a wonderful sense of humor and a ready smile.
At this moment three things stick out in my mind about her.
Her pride in her son, Bill and his accomplishments. Many times she would tell me of some new thing in his job he had done and how proud she was of him.
Her love of animals. She would spare no effort in her care and compassion for animals, from her rabbit that she nursed back to health from an animal attack,to her three legged cat,her goat she rescued, and her tender care of her neighbors injured sheep.
Her work ethic. We spent many days over the years working on her many projects which she somehow managed to "Tom Sawyer" me into. She was a hard and energetic worker with boundless enthusiasm for life.
Our condolences to her family and friends. She is surely missed by all.

Nancy Was a great lady... I did not know her that well but the times I did spend chatting with her while waiting for the ferries in order to deliver the pizzas to the boat made for a great time. she was always smiling and this made my days so much brighter. Thanks you Nancy, you will be missed by many.

Dear Bill and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I met Nancy about 8 years ago as a ferry passenger and got to know and love her when we were both WSF employees. My mom lives back east and I came to think of Nancy as a second mom. She let me help her with heavy jobs on her property and I really enjoyed all the time I shared with her. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Nancy will always live on in our hearts.

Dear Bill and family,

You well know I have such fond memories of your Mom that will be with me forever. She certainly helped shape me into who I am today by instilling my love of horses and all the hard work that goes with following that passion. I tell the kids I work with today the stories of Nancy getting me to do things I really didn't want to do, whether that was working cleaning out the barn for hours or galloping at an uncontrollable pace off the side of the then dirt road over Koura. She would turn to me is I was hollering for mercy behind her with a big smile on her face, "I can't hear a word you are saying!" Off we would go. The terror eventually changed to all out enjoyment and adventure I have continued to seek. Once an adrenelin junkie always one. I look forward to seeing you and Jennifer next weekend celebrating your Mom's life and wish you all my best.

Nancy's smile was contagious; whenever she came into the bank she was smiling and before she would leave so were we.
I was so deeply moved by Nancy's courage and positive attitude.

About 3 months ago there was a profound exchange of words with Nancy that touched the very center of my heart. Despite all that Nancy was facing in her own life; she came up to me and asked, "How's married life? You look happy."(I had recently been married).

I will always remember Nancy with the upmost respect and with a smile in my heart. I will miss you Nancy.

I am so sorry for your loss. Nancy was a unique individual whom I had the pleaure of knowing for 57 years. I was a lonesome sailor stationed at the USNCOM station at the site of old Fort Ward. I arrived there in July of 1952. One evening, I took the liberty bus into Winslow, just to see civilian life for a change. I walked the streets of Winslow, looking in the shop windows, and as luck would have it, it started to rain, as it so often does in the North West. As I walked past the Island taxi stand, a little voice from within said " hi sailor--come on in---it isn't raining in here. The kind voice was that of a 14 year old girl named Nancy Cave, who was working as taxi dispatcher. I went in out of the rain, sat down, and had a long conversation with Nancy. We immediately became friends. Who would have known that that friendship would last for 57 years. When I returned home to Massachusetts, we stayed in touch by telephone, primarily on the holidays. After raising two families, my wife and I flew to Seattle and spent a wonderful week at Nancys home. Three years ago, Nancy flew back east and spent a week with us, finaly meeting my family. Oh, what a wonderful time we had, and then back to telephoning. She called to tell me of her retirement and then about her health issues. I am going to miiss my little buddy from Bainbridge Island so very much. She was a wonderful person, and I know she is in heaven greeting everyone and helping out wherever she can.
We love you Nancy, and we WILL meet again.

Bill: Please accept our sympathy in the passing of your Mom. Although I didn't know her personally, she was a good friend to my Dad when he was a young sailor stationed in Adak. They met through your Uncle Bobby (?) and stayed friends for all these years. My Dad has always talked about your Mom and what a sweet person she was. He and my Mom visited her a few years back and they were so happy to have her come and visit them in New England. I am so sorry to hear of your loss.

I was a regular ferry passenger and Nancy and I would exchange a warm smile of hello. Eventually a brief conversation and then a wonderful friendship developed. She was very concerned when I became ill and came by or called me often. She was such a good friend. The last time I saw her, she came by our house with her little blue sports car and some abundance from her garden. She always had laughter and joy in her heart, I will miss her more than I can say. Good bye dear friend.

Love and prayers to her family.

Dear Bill and Family,
Please accept my sincerest sympathy for your loss. I was one of those kids she helped so generously and kindly at pony club. There I was, 9 or 10 years old, riding my tacky little horse, no equipment, no riding boots and fairly clueless. She didn't see the things I lacked, she saw someone who wanted to learn and she treated me with such kindness and patience!

In later years I would run into her on the boat and she would greet me with a smile and a hug. She was a rare person, truly one in a million and I will miss her.

Thank you for sharing her with all of us over the years!

I don't know how to explain everything Nancy did for the Bainbridge Island Pony club and for all those around her. She was always a force toward acheivement. Always a positive, but knew what could be acheived with more work, which she did herself she never asked us to do anything more than what she herself did. She is part Bainbridge History, a brick adding to the structure of the real world (work hard, do your best and enjoy life) Her Kindness and Goodness will be greatly missed in a world of selfishness

Bill and family,
Louise and I are very sorry for your loss. Nancy was a wonderful person, full of life and always a pleasure to be around. Louise remembers fondly her days with the Pony Club and her very hard work in getting that organization started and underway. The Bainbridge Island horse community will forever be in debt to her vision and her tenacity. Nancy was one of the hardest working people we have even known. Her love of animals was always apparent, particularly in her days at the vet clinic when she put in long, long hours caring for other people's pets. Your family's loss is our loss. Please accept our condolences.

Dear Bill and family,

What a wonderful and sweet neighbor for fifty years! I am so sorry her long awaited retirement was so short, but she took her own fate with true Nancy spirit. She saw the brighter side, tried her hardest, and always had hope. Her smile and her laugh would brighten anyone's day. She was an Island treasure and will be greatly missed, especially in our little neighborhood. (Probably one of the world's best pie bakers, too!) I just thought she would be there forever, really hard to even imagine her gone. I will certainly miss her and am so sorry for your loss.

Hugs from our family.

Nancy greeted me as I stepped onto the ferry in the morning on my way to another working day in Seattle - she always had a smile for everyone. After lowering the gangplank to let incoming passengers off, Nancy gave the "walk-ons" permission to start boarding.
Late yesterday afternoon, Nancy passed away - or should I say, "Went up there to help greet" as she did for so many years at the Bainbridge Island dock. She was a warm, caring lady who had many friends among passengers and workers on the WSF. Nancy, you will be missed by many.
