Sean Kristian Ellison, Petty Officer First Class, STS1 SS, passed away unexpectedly in Bremerton, Washington, on Sunday, January 21, 2018. Sean, 30, was the beloved husband of Rachael Anne Manning Ellison and doting father to their daughters, Mary and Keyra. At the time of his passing, Sean was on active duty, ashore at the Naval Submarine Base in Bangor, Washington.

Sean was born in Laie (on Oahu), Hawaii, on February 24, 1987, the eldest of Ronald and Jean Ellison's five children. Soon afterwards, the family moved to Port Orchard, Washington, and then back to Laie, Hawaii (his beloved "Aina"), when Sean was 11 years old. The family relocated to Oregon just in time for Sean's senior year, and he graduated from Tillamook High School. Sean loved participating in the Boy Scouts, and earned the rank of Life Scout while in Hawaii. Sean is remembered by his brothers and sisters as the “Best Big Brother in the World.”

Sean and Rachael were high school sweethearts and were married in Tillamook, Oregon, on November 18, 2006. Shortly after Mary, their eldest daughter, was born, Sean followed in his father's and grandfather's footsteps and entered the U.S. Navy. Keyra was born 19 months later, while Sean was training to be a Submarine Sonar Technician. Sean and Rachael, active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, were sealed together in marriage for time and all eternity in the Seattle Washington Temple in October 2010.

Sean was a dedicated family man. He was happiest when surrounded by his wife and daughters. He also cherished time spent with his parents, and his brothers and sisters, and their families. Sean was instrumental in bringing everyone together. A pursuer of many hobbies, Sean loved kayaking and hiking with his family. In addition, he was a music and film buff, an avid reader, a cheese connoisseur, an amazing collector of trivia, and a video game fanatic. Sean was also a loyal Seattle Sounders and Mariners fan, and always hoped for the Sonics to return to Seattle.

Petty Officer Ellison served on the USS Michigan, SSGN727, where he earned his submarine “Dolphins” qualification badge. While aboard, he served as a religious lay leader, Leading Petty Officer and Sonar Supervisor. On board the Michigan, Sean earned five Navy and Marine Corps Commendations. Sean loved his job in the Navy and loved being on a submarine at sea.

Besides all of his other titles, Sean was a man of God. Sean served in many capacities in his church and was totally committed to his Heavenly Father and to everything he did while on this earth. He had a heart of gold and was selfless, doing anything for anyone. Sean put God first, his family second, followed by duty to his country.

As Sean returns to his heavenly home, he joins his paternal and maternal grandmothers, Sandy and Cathy, and his “Auntie Rita.” Sean's family and friends cherish fond memories of his short life well lived, and he will be greatly missed by his wife, Rachael; his daughters, Mary and Keyra; his parents, Ron and Jean; his younger brothers, Marcus and Erich; his younger sisters, Ke’ilani and Kainani; extended family; other cherished loved ones; and fellow shipmates.

In lieu of flowers, donations to a GoFundMe account in the name of his daughters, Mary and Keyra, would be gratefully accepted:

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, January 27, at 11 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 11070 Old Frontier Road NW, Silverdale. All are welcome to attend.

Interment will take place at Tahoma National Cemetery.
