Barbara Marie Zinn

d. December 1, 2008

born July 12th, 1934, passed away quietly and peacefully on December 1st at the Hospice Care Center in Bremerton where she had been staying since August. Barbara was born in Long Beach, California where, in high school, she was a cheerleader and teen model for Buffum's Department Store. She met her husband Robert=2 0at a coffee shop in Los Angeles in 1957 and they wed the following February. After moving to the Island in 1975, Barbara worked variously for the School District as an assistant librarian at Commodore Middle School and as the attendance secretary at Bainbridge High School. Among her great passions were her garden--and the amazing wealth of gardening resources on the Island, especially Junkoh Harui's incredible nursery; tennis, both as an avid player and watcher; colonial antiques, mysteries, and traveling. She also adopted her family's various interests as her own--becoming an ardent fan of her daughter's horse shows and her husband and son's various exploits in the theater.Though her husband Robert Zinn passed away in May, Barbara is survived by her daughter Ann (BHS ‘83), who lives with her husband Bruce and 2 children (Greta Rose and Emma Jean) in the Bay Area; her son David (BHS ‘87) who lives in Brooklyn; and her b rother Jim, of Long Beach, California. She did live long enough to celebrate her 50th Wedding Anniversary in February and the birth of her second grandchild, Greta Rose, in November. Though not technically a survivor, her children would like to deeply thank Kris Carroll and her husband David Adler, who cared for mom in her last months with an incredible and family-like devotion. The Hospice Care Center also took wonderful care of Barbara in her last months, and in lieu of flowers a donation can be made in her name to Hospice of Kitsap County, PO Box 3416, Silverdale, WA 98383 (hospiceofkitsapcounty.org).Barbara loved Bainbridge Island, and her children are profoundly grateful to have called it home for so long. Though their parent's passing marks the end of the Zinn presence there, it is impossible to overstate the gift that the Island gave to Barbara, Robert, Ann, and David--of community, and culture, and beauty, and tranquility. Her children are very grateful to you all.
