David Harrison Moen

David Harrison Moen of Bainbridge Island, WA died on Tuesday, April 21st in the company of loved ones. A stroke just a few days following his 80th birthday resulted in hospitalization and eventual Hospice care. He lived another 80 days after the unplanned helicopter ride to a Seattle hospital on February 1, 2020.
Born in Bellingham, WA on January 26, 1940, he was the son of Einar B. Moen and Mary Sue (Mock) Moen. David spent all his youth in Bellingham attending Birchwood and Washington Elementary Schools, Whatcom Junior High, and Bellingham High School from which he graduated in 1958. In his last days, he spoke often of a desire to go home – he loved Bellingham and the memories of that place and its people were important to him throughout his life.
David attended the University of Washington and graduated in 1962 with a degree in Economics. He was a proud member of the Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) fraternity and served as chapter president for a year. Following graduation, he was employed by the national office of ATO and visited campus chapters across the country because he so valued the concept of brotherhood. In 1965 he began a telecommunications career working in management for Pacific NW Bell/US West. From 1983-1984, he was on executive loan to the National Association of County Officials and oversaw a national convention in Seattle for this organization. In 1990 he became eligible to take advantage of an early retirement offer from the telephone world. He immediately took delight in volunteering for various organizations, and he became the first male president of the PTO at Commodore Middle School on Bainbridge. He continued to volunteer through all his remaining years with various organizations including the YMCA of the Rockies, Heifer International, and local organizations including Seabeck Conference Center, Bainbridge Education Support Team, and Bainbridge Community Foundation, the last of which he was a founding member.
He also pursued a second career in fundraising consultation to not-for-profit institutions and organizations. He relished this work of being involved with institutions from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to local libraries, museums, performing arts groups, and churches.
David had a deep faith fostered by a heritage of Lutheran ancestry and membership in several Episcopal churches throughout his adult life. He offered his leadership skills in many areas of the life of a church as well as fostering caring relationships and honoring the work of those who built firm foundations.
David was predeceased by his parents and older sister, Marilyn (Moen) Vujovich. He is survived by his family who all adored him – his wife of 45 years, Fran, and daughters, Erica (Raúl), Alissa (Gerson), grandchildren (Maia and Luka), many nieces and nephews as well as countless friends. He will be remembered for his deep appreciation and sharing of his Norwegian heritage, for his quick sense of humor, for one-liners that cut through to the core of an issue and for his ability to listen and put others at ease…a true "Gentle-Man".
