Garet Benjamin Barney

d. March 20, 2017

passed away on March 20, 2017. He was 40 years of age.Garet was the son of Michael and Monte Barney, and he was born on August 24, 1976, in Pendleton, Oregon. His parents moved their family to Southern California when Garet was four years old. He graduated from Saddleback High School.Following high school, Garet was called to the New York, New York North Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served as an assistant to the mission president, President Ronald A. Rasband (now a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles). He loved being a missionary. He loved his missionary companions. He loved the people that he met and taught. Most importantly, he loved sharing his testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. After returning home from his missionary service, Garet attended Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, where his most important accomplishment was meeting Mindy Love Crane. Both Garet and Mindy transferred to Utah State University to continue their studies, and Garet graduated with a Bachelor's Degree having double majored in Finance and Economics, and minored in International Business, Spanish, and Music.Garet made a career as a financial analyst working at the Naval Base in Keyport, Washington. He was loved and respected by all of his co-workers.After transferring to Utah State University, Garet finally gathered up enough courage to ask Mindy to join "team Barney," and they were married in the LDS Seattle Temple on June 30, 2001. Their eternal union was blessed by the addition of six beautiful children. Garet was a devoted husband and father, and his family was his greatest joy.A giant of a man in so many ways, he was a "man large in stature, and also having received much strength of the Lord." He had a laugh that could fill a room (or maybe several rooms), and he loved to laugh. He could find humor in any situation, and was never afraid to laugh at himself. He loved to learn and was an exceptional listener and a trusted friend. Music was a large part of his life, and he was an exceptionally talented singer and performer.Garet's was a life of service. He did not know how to give any less than 110%. He served faithfully in his church in many different capacities. He was a remarkable youth leader that truly loved every young man that he served. He was a loving Bishop of the LDS Silverdale 1st Ward, and a model of Christlike love and compassion.Garet was a bright light in this world and he will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.Garet was preceded in death by his grandparents, Wayne and Hazel Barney.
