74, passed away August 31, 2007, at his home on Bainbridge Island, Washington, following a two-year battle with cancer.John was born November 11, 1932 to Virginia and Milton J. Daly in Ketchikan, Alaska. He was raised in Ketchikan, attending high school at Marmion Military Academy in Aurora, Illinois, graduating in 1950; and the University of Washington, graduating in 1958 in Mechanical Engineering. He served on active duty with the U.S. Army from 1954-57 in Mainz, Germany, and reserve duty with the Alaska National Guard from 1958-1963.After graduating from college, John returned to Ketchikan and joined his father, Milton J. Daly, in the Ketchikan Spruce Mills. Upon his father's death in 1965, John became President and General Manager of KSM, the third generation to lead the mill. When KSM was sold to Georgia Pacific in 1967, it ended a sixty-four year span in which the business was largely owned and managed by the Daly family. John moved to Anchorage in 1970 and continued his career in the timber industry as a senior Vice president of Kodiak Lumber Mills in Anchorage, Alaska, during the 70s and 80s. In Anchorage he was Vice President and Director of the Anchorage Racquet Club, served as a director for Alaska Pacific Bank, Alaska Loggers Association, Alaska Repertory Theatre and was a member of Alaska Nippon Kai and the Petroleum Club of Anchorage.During his time in Alaska, John was active in political and civic affairs. He served as Senator Frank Murkowski's Campaign Manager from 1980 through 1993. In 1991 he moved to Washington D.C. to serve as Executive Assistant to the Senator.While on the East Coast, John developed his love for soaring. In 1994 he moved to Bainbridge Island, Washington, and enjoyed over a decade of active soaring. He had been a member of the Evergreen Soaring Club since 1994 and Chairman of the Seattle Glider Council for five years, 2001 through 2005.John is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Margaret Ann and Tore Lynne of Ketchikan, Alaska, and nephew, Mark E. Lynne of Bainbridge Island, Washington. His brother James Daly of Ketchikan and Bainbridge Island, Washington, preceded him in death.Following cremation, interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Seattle. The family suggests memorial remembrances may be made to Hospice of Kitsap County, P.O. Box 3416, Silverdale, WA 98383 or to a charity of choice.Arrangements by Cook Family Funeral Home.
