"Judy" was born in Melrose, Massachusetts to Frank and Virginia Schurr and grew up in various locations across the country. She graduated from Bellevue High School before attending Western Washington University where she met her husband Bill Braun. In 1963, they moved to Bainbridge Island taking up residence in her grandmother's beach home where they have raised two sons and remained for forty-five years. Judy passed away peacefully in the presence of her family at the Island Rehabilitation Center in Winslow on Wednesday April 23 after surviving breast cancer for 14 years.In her early years on the Island, Judy co-founded the Bargain Boutique which was transferred to the Lenora Ostrander Guild. As a non-profit supporting the Children's Orthopedic Hospital, Judy managed the store until 1970. Later, she worked as a paralegal for several law firms in Seattle until her retirement in 1990.Judy was an avid tennis player, skier and an adventurous traveler throughout her life. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting and quilting but will be remembered most as a lively and spirited person. She was fiercely dedicated to her home, family and friends, and most recently her four grandchildren. Judy is survived by her husband Bill Braun with whom she maintained a loving relationship for 48 years. Bill remains at their home on Bainbridge Island. Her eldest son, Greg Braun resides in Poulsbo with his wife Lynn and children Annie Rose and Alexander. Her younger son, Lee Braun, lives in Boston, Massachusetts with his wife Sarah and children Isabel and Alistair. Judy also leaves behind her brother Michael Schurr of Seattle, sister Lisa Dare of Portland, and her step-mother, Bette Schurr of Lyndon, Washington.A celebration for Judy will be held on Friday, May 2 at 1:30 pm at the Grace Episcopal Church located at 8595 NE Day Road on Bainbridge Island.In lieu of flowers and gifts, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation at www.komen.org.
