passed away December 19, 2007 at Virgin Mason Medical Center in Seattle, WA. She was born Marian Evelyn Battey on November 30, 1928 in Wenatchee, WA to Gershom Gardiner and Mazie Witters Battey. She graduated from the University of Oregon in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in art. She married Robert D. Melim in 1949 and followed his Naval career around the world eventually settling in the Poulsbo area in 1971. She moved to Bainbridge Island following his death in 1991.She is survived by her sister, Lorraine B. Still of Creswell, OR; her four children, Michael James Melim of Bellingham, WA, Diane Camille Melim Grayson of North Bend, WA, Peter Brian Melim of Fairfax Station, VA and Leslie Allison Melim of Macomb, IL; eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.She had an active career as an artist, achieving some commercial success, including 15 life-size ceramic animal sculptures for Western Washington University (1978); a bronze plaque for the City of Bremerton that was presented to the submarine "USS Bremerton" by the city (1981); a bronze memorial statue of St. Cecilia (1998) and the new church sign (2006) for St. Barnabas Episcopal Church as well as numerous paintings, sculptures and other works of art.Marian was active in St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, serving on Alter Guild for 20 years, and the Bainbridge Island Garden Club, where she was secretary. She also volunteered for a number of years as a docent at the Woodland Park Zoo and the Frye Art Museum. She will be missed by all who knew her.A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 1187 Wyatt Way, Bainbridge Island, Washington on December 29, 2007 at 2:00 PM.Arrangements entrusted to Cook Family Funeral Home.
