Albert Lee Gunby, 87, died 12/10/2024 at home in Poulsbo, attended by his family.
He was born in New Jersey and raised in Los Angeles, CA, graduating with both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from UCLA before beginning a long career in engineering. He married Linda Lou Nuckols in 1963.
Al worked on nuclear power projects at Atomics International, Westinghouse, and General Electric over two decades before switching to Lockheed to work on the Space Station’s solar panels. Always active in his churches, he sang in the choir, did prison ministry, co-ran youth groups with Linda, and participated in lay ministry and arranging theatrical worship elements.
Throughout his life, Al also expressed his love of music and theatre. He performed in many community theatre productions in Richland, WA and San Jose, CA, including several runs as his favorite character, Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha. After retiring to Poulsbo, WA, he co-founded the Jewel Box Theatre and performed in many of its plays. He was also a longtime performer with the Kitsap Chordsmen/West Sound Chorus and several quartets, singing barbershop. His nightly concert while doing the dishes will be sorely missed.
After Linda passed in 2006, Al was lucky enough to reconnect with an earlier love, Linda Akin Hook, who he married in 2008. They enjoyed a brief few years together before she passed in 2012. He is survived by his daughter Carol, son Lee, and his grandchildren, Danielle and Ben.
A celebration of life is being planned for later in the spring at Suquamish UCC.
Arrangements entrusted to Cook Family Funeral Home of Bainbridge Island, WA.
