Alice Downs set sail peacefully from this earthly life on October 1, 2023 at age 94. Her friends always said that she was a kind, gentle, and loving person, and her family couldn’t agree more. Alice’s family roots are spread throughout the beautiful Great Lakes region. As a young adult, she worked as a telephone operator, modeled for the Dayton’s Department store, and met her husband of 55 Years, James Downs. James preceded her in death in 2005. Together they raised a large family: Timothy, Kathleen, Patrick, Mary, and Peggy who we lost too soon. Alice’s young family relocated from coast-to- coast in support of Jim’s corporate career. They finally settled in the beautiful Pacific Northwest where Alice was most proud of her work as a realtor. Alice and Jim developed a passion for sailing and enjoyed summer months sailing the magnificent San Juan and Gulf Islands on remote coastal cruises. They were known in local sailing circles as expert regional marine navigators and often had fresh-caught fish and crab on the menu. A close companion was their beloved dog with sea legs, who always wore a life vest.
Alice never considered herself old and had immense pride in the fact that she was able to drive herself and others until a ripe old age. In her earlier days, she sang with Sweet Adeline Barbershop groups and later with the Evergreen Singers on Bainbridge Island. Alice and her husband Jim were music lovers and attended the Seattle Opera, Seattle Symphony, and Seattle Jazz Club. She continued to enjoy music with her friends for many years after Jim’s passing. She was a voracious reader, informed follower of current events, New York Times Spelling Bee Genius, Wordle buff, and a model of the best type to a younger generation to stay sharp.
We will dearly miss her indomitable spirit which stems from her Finnish ancestry and is known as “Sisu.” Sisu is an integral part of understanding Finnish culture. It is a concept that describes a unique combination of resilience, perseverance, and extraordinary determination in the face of adversity. It is a form of inner strength and enables individuals to push beyond their preconceived limits and tap into their hidden potential. Sisu is deeply woven into Alice’s character and life, and will be remembered forever.
We are grateful for the compassionate care that she received in her final chapter at the Madrona House on Bainbridge Island where she was treated like family. Alice — a loving Wife, Mother, Aunt, Grandmother and Great Grandmother “GiGi” — you will be dearly missed.
Alice’s wish was not to have a traditional service. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to, may send a donation to Seattle Children’s Hospital.
Arrangements entrusted to Cook Family Funeral Home of Bainbridge Island, WA.
