passed away in Longview, Washington, on 15 June 2012.She was born 20 January 1919, in Lewisville, Idaho, to John Mauritz Lindstrom and Eleanor Haroldsen where she lived and worked on the family farm with her two brothers and three sisters. She graduated from Brigham Young University in 1941, taught high school English and then helped with the war effort in Brigham City, Utah, where she met, John H. Shumaker, and married him on 16 September 1945 at the family home. Alice lived in Gilberton where she was a homemaker and mother to their five children. They later moved to Allyn for their retirement years, living on Grapeview Loop Road.She was a thrifty and efficient homemaker and a hardworking mother as she and John raised their five children. Alice always took time to be active in her community, working on the election board for many years, as a volunteer mentor for the HOSTS program, and being a good neighbor. She loved music and shared her talents by giving piano lessons to grandchildren and writing lyrics to popular tunes to help her family remember their heritage. She loved to sing and dance, read a good book, or sit quietly listening to birds. She loved nature and kept beautiful flower gardens, teaching her children and grandchildren a love for plants and nature. She enjoyed backpacking and camping in the mountains and along the coast.Alice has been a lifelong active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she taught in all the auxiliaries and shared her talent for music. Her testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ strengthened her family and friends.She is preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, brother, Morgan, and sister, Evelyn. She is survived by two sisters, Inga Tyler of Rigby, Idaho, and Marjorie Anderson, of Inkom, Idaho; one brother, Virgil (Joyce) Lindstrom of Lewisville, Idaho; three sons, Denis Shumaker of Belfair, Rodney Shumaker of Belfair, and Keith (Patty) Shumaker of Bremerton; two daughters, Ellen (William Davis) of Castle Rock, Washington, and Irene (Kenneth Fry) of Eagle, Idaho. Alice has 29 grand children and 65 great-grandchildren with a few more on the way. She also has many nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be held for Alice Shumaker on Saturday 23 June 2012 at 11 AM at the Belfair Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 40 East Belwood Lane, Allyn, Washington, after which her body will be interred at the Sandhill Cemetery, Belfair, Washington.
