Bruce Craig Grant, beloved husband, father, brother, son and dear friend to many, passed away in his sleep in the early morning hours of February 3, 2025, his wife of 45 years by his side. He was 71 years old.
Born on August 2, 1953, he and his siblings spent their early years playing in the red clay of McAlester, Oklahoma. When the family moved to the suburbs of Washington DC in 1960, Bruce lent his voice to the calls for civil rights, environmental awareness, and peace. In 1970, his father was offered a job working for Health and Human Services in Seattle, and the family moved once more to bucolic Bainbridge Island. Bruce graduated from Bainbridge High School, and then the Gompers School of Cabinet Making and Millwork.
Bruce was a builder. With wood and tools he crafted houses, musical instruments and cabinetry, guided by a creative, imaginative eye. With people, he forged lasting bonds through kindness, respect, and an endlessly compassionate and welcoming heart. He was by nature a joyful person, a seeker who practiced gratitude and generosity daily, and was present for the ordinary things in life. Bruce always had a twinkle in his eye, backed by a mischievous wit. It was truly a delight to be in his company.
Bruce married Mary Foster in 1979 on Bainbridge Island, and they welcomed their son Arthur into the world soon after. Bruce’s greatest joy in the last chapter of his life was working with Arthur and his wife Kailey in the building of their home, followed by a complete rebuild of the Foster family’s Port Madison Pram sailboat.
Bruce is survived by his wife Mary, son Arthur, sister Melinda, brothers Eric and Dave, and a passel of in-laws, and nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
We will miss his wry sense of humor, calming presence, and in his gentle way, the tremendous love he distributed so freely to all of us throughout his life.
