Curtis M. Buitenveld

September 1, 1942 — March 21, 2023

Curtis M Buitenveld passed peacefully at his home March 21, 2023, surrounded by family.

Curtis was born September 1, 1942 in Billings, MT to Max and Billie Buitenveld. He was a graduate of Bainbridge Island High School where he established many lifelong friendships. He went on to attend Olympic College, then served in the Army as a Nuclear Weapons Specialist. In July 1967, on his way to The World’s Fair in Canada, he stopped to visit a cousin in Minidoka, ID. His first morning in town, he was introduced to Kay and he never left. Curt and Kay were married September 16, 1967.

Curt had a varied career from working at Boeing, to cowboying, to working at Keyport and at Bangor. He was, however, a Cowboy at heart and always longed to return to ranching. His greatest joy and most beloved titles were Dad and Grandpa. He was an avid hunter and loved being in the mountains on his horse. He was best known for his generosity, his gregarious personality, for storytelling, and his ever present Cowboy hat. For the past fifty years, Saturday and Sunday mornings Curt could always be found sharing coffee and swapping stories with his lifelong friends, Wy, Zack, Jack, and John.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sally Simpson. He is survived by his wife Kay, his eldest daughter Tammera Hood, her husband Jason, and their sons Samuel and Caden, and his youngest daughter, Stacie Perunovic, her husband Novak and their daughter Mila. He is also survived by his two brothers, Harlan and Steve Buitenveld.

Those who wish to remember Curtis may make a donation in his memory to the Wounded Warriors Project or Tunnels to Towers. The family will be celebrating Curt on May 21, 2023

Arrangements are entrusted to the Cook Family Funeral Home of Bainbridge Island.
