Donald Chapman

passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. He was born on June 7, 1927 and was 82 years of age.Mr. Chapman was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. He practiced architecture as a principal since 1956. He headed projects in Hawaii, the Pacific Basin and Far East areas, including Tahiti, Kwajalein, Midway, Guam, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Korea. His experience as principal-in-charge of projects for public and private sector clients includes commercial, resort, residential, industrial, recreational, health care and educational facilities. A number of these projects have received awards for architectural design. He was the design architect for the Arizona Memorial Visitors Center at Pearl Harbor. He was awarded the Blue Seal Award from the Department of Defense for the Arizona Memorial Shoreline Facilities, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.Mr. Chapman attended Punahou School, and Admiral Farragut Academy. He graduated with a Master's Degree in Architecture from Tulane University. Don served on the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers, Architects, Surveyors and Landscape Architects, as an appointee of the Governor of Hawaii, for 8-1/2 years. He served twice as President of Hawaii Society/The American Institute of Architects, and was an active member of many other professional and civic organizations. In 1984 Mr. Chapman was made a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, a national honor bestowed on a select few of the nation's architects who have made significant contributions to their communities and their profession. Mr. Chapman received the Ernie H. Hara Distinguished Service Award from the University of Hawaii School of Architecture.He was an active sailor, a charter member of the Kaneohe Yacht Club, a member of the Waikiki and Maui Yacht Clubs, and in addition to holding State Championships, sailed in both the Transpacific yacht and Congressional Cup Races. Either on his own boat or chartered, he sailed all over the world. His hobby was wood working and specifically Model Boats, which are now in the homes of his friends and families.He is survived by his wife Carol Hartley Chapman, daughters Denice Kelly and husband John, grandchildren Michael and Jennifer, Elizabeth Lucarelli and husband Don, and granddaughters Malia and Christine.. He also leaves behind his brother Robert and wife Cara, Joe Hartley, Jeff Hartley and their families.Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Remembrance Service for Don on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the family residence on Bainbridge Island. The sharing time will begin promptly at 2 PM, followed by a reception until 5 :00 PM at the home. A scattering of his ashes will be held in Hawaii at a later date.
