Edward Martin Elvejord of Poulsbo, Wash., passed away Dec. 27, 2013. Born Oct. 19, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y., "Ed" grew up on Staten Island. He served in the U.S. Navy, Pacific Theater, during the last year of World War II. He then attended Houghton College and graduated from Valparaiso University in 1950 with a degree in physics and minor in religion. Ed enjoyed traveling and met his future wife, Rigmor Aasberg, on a ship in the North Sea while on a trip to Norway. They married in 1959 and raised a family beginning in California and later moving to Washington. Ed retired in the late 80s from the civil service at Naval Undersea Warfare Center at Bangor. He had previously worked at Keyport, the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, and Boeing. He enjoyed photography and all things weather. He cherished singing in several choirs as a baritone during his life, including the Bainbridge Chorale for many years until 2006. He was active in the churches he attended and was a member of Bremerton Sons of Norway, Oslo Lodge, and Bremerton 63 Toastmasters. A keen baseball fan, Ed enjoyed watching a game on T.V. or live and as young man sat in the outfield several times at Ebbets Field to watch history in the making when Jackie Robinson first played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Ed was a kind and gentle man, and also had a great sense of humor. His laugh will be fondly remembered. Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Rigmor, in 2011. He is survived by his daughter Ingunn; sons Sherwin and Erik; granddaughters Berit, Baylee and Rylee; and an older sister, Ragnhild Francis, of Berlin, Maryland. A memorial service will be held Jan. 11 at 10:00 a.m. at Hansville Community Church, 7543 NE Twin Spits Road, Hansville, (360) 638-2335. Please sign the on-line guest book for the family.
