93, of Poulsbo passed away peacefully on April 13, 204 surrounded by his family.Emil was born on July 6, 1920 at his family home in Port Orchard. He graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1938 and went on to complete a machinist apprenticeship at Keyport Naval Base. During that time he met and married June Virkelyst on November 18, 1944. After completing his tour in the US Army in 1946, he went to work at PSNS as a machinist, retiring in 974 as a gyro compass mechanic. He was well known at PSNS for his ability to make tools and parts on a metal lathe, and received various accommodations for these inventions.Upon retirement Emil and June spent many happy years traveling in their trailer whether at the Washington Coast razor clam digging, or as far away as Alaska, Missouri, and Minnesota. They also traveled to Norway and Denmark visiting their extended family and in Austria visiting Al Karlbauer (Whom they considered part of their family), an exchange student that lived with them in 1966 Emil also spent many hours in his vegetable garden and tending his flowers. He was very creative and really enjoyed making things in his shop and on his lathe. He could make a tool for anything needed.Emil was a member of First Lutheran Church and a life member of the Sons of Norway. He was also involved in Boy Scout Troop 71 as a Scoutmaster and Scout Leader for many years.Emil is survived by his wife June of Poulsbo, son Ken Breiland (Deborah) of Bainbridge Island, daughter Candy Korsmo (Bill) of Poulsbo, four grandchildren, Beth Oak (Gavin) of Poulsbo, Brenda Johnson (Phillip) of Port Orchard, Anna-Lisa Miller (Aaron) of Portland, OR, Kjell Breiland of Seattle, and three great grandchildren, Alex & Mason Oak, and Clara Miller. He is also survived by his niece, Shirley Sutterlin, (Dick) of Sequim and foreign exchange student Alois Karlbauer (Ranate), Austria.Emil was preceded in death by his son Gary Breiland.Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Memorial Service on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 11:00 Am at the First Lutheran Church in Poulsbo, WA.
