Harold A. Herzog

born June 12, 1917 in Utica, New York, died peacefully in Poulsbo, WA on March 7. He and Nell, his wife of 65 years, raised four children.He is survived by Nell, their children Hal, Cathy Puma, Philip and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by their daughter Gwen. Even as a child Harold was drawn to the sky. When the war broke out, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and flew 71 bombing missions over Europe, North Africa, and Asia, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and other medals. After the war, he joined Pan American World Airways, and for 28 years flew transcontinental routes to Central and South America, Asia, and Europe. Always active, he did not slow down a bit upon retiring in 1974. He fished, skied, and gardened. He took up motorcycles, scuba diving, and wood carving. A master craftsman, he loved wood, metal and tools, and he could fix anything. He was devoted to his dachshunds, most of whom were named Willie.An aviator of the old school, he built his first airplane at the age of 12. It crashed. He built his next airplane when he was 70, an ultra light with a lawn chair for a seat and a joy stick made from a fishing float. It soared.Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Memorial Service on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Montclair Park Retirement Home in Poulsbo, Washington (see map below).
