was born on July 13, 1918 in Thailand. When he was 9 years old, he and his younger brother moved to Canton, China to live with relatives. The Sino-Japanese War broke out when he was in high school. Upon graduation from high school, he joined the Chinese Army Whampoa Military Academy, which was lead by General Chiang Kai-Shek. He served in the Kuomintang Army during World War II and fought the Communists during the Chinese Civil War. In 1946 he married Chung and elder daughter Lin was born on 1948. In 1948 he and the family moved from Mainland China to Taiwan with the Kuomintang and General Chiang Kai-Shek. It would be another 40 years before he could return to China to visit relatives. Son Jiann-Shing was born in 1950 and daughter Lih was born in 1952. He was a Colonel in the Army and in charged of many civil engineering projects in Taiwan until his retirement in 1984. He was a devoted and honest civil servant that earned him recognition and respect.After his retirement in 1984, he moved with wife to Argentina to be with daughter Lin. Although he spoke very little Spanish, he was determined to help Lin ran her gift shop business. He was proud of his successes in running the business. He immigrated to the United States in 1987 and lived with daughter Lih in San Francisco. He helped Lih raised two loving grandchildren who had many fond memories of him.He moved to Oakland, California with his wife in 1992. He and his wife loved to have daily walk around Lake Merritt. His wife Chung preceded him in death in 1995. Shyu was a dedicated military man who loved his country, family and friends. He liked music and taught himself how to play piano, harmonica, and singing. During his stay at the Messenger Care Center, he often played classic Chinese tunes at the piano. He was well liked by everyone at the Care Center. When we were growing up, we always thought of him as our gentle and loving giant. We will remember him as our "little angel". Good-bye father. You are forever in our hearts.Private Graveside Services will be held by the family. Interment at Port Blakely Cemetery.
