Born Joan Vickery Kamm on April 22, 1932, in San Jose, CA, Jody was raised in Portland, Oregon, and Walla Walla, Washington. She attended Whitman College, where she graduated in 1953 with a degree in English Literature. Early in her career, Jody worked in hospitality at Jackson Lake Lodge and then ran the children’s and riding programs at Smoke Tree Ranch in Palm Springs, California, wherewith her joyful personality she befriended Walt Disney and Cary Grant, among others. In 1959, Jody moved to Seattle, where she served as a social worker for the YMCA. She met the love of her life, David Prongay, on a blind ski date at Steven’s Pass in January 1962. The couple were married April 28 that same year, and headed to Huntsville, AL and then Houston, TX for David to work on the Apollo Program. In 1977 Jody returned to the Seattle area with her family to live on Bainbridge Island where she remained with David for the past 43 years. Jody enjoyed a 35-year career as a real estate broker and retired from John L. Scott in 2005. She was a founding member of the Housing Resource Board of Bainbridge Island, a patron of many charities including Bainbridge Performing Arts, Bainbridge Art Museum, an officer and long-time member of Kiwanis International, an active alumna, and supporter of Whitman College, and an avid volunteer, especially for literacy. She loved music deeply and sang with the Bainbridge Chorale and the St. Barnabas Choir for many years. She is survived by her husband, her daughters Kamm and Vickery, her son Robert, and her three granddaughters, Naya, Holly, and Talia.
Memorial donations can be made to Bainbridge Performing Arts, Bainbridge Schools Foundation, Island Volunteer Caregivers, or any of the wonderful local charities you knew she supported.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at 2 pm at St. Barnabas Church, followed by a celebration of her life in the Parish Hall.
