Joan Mcmicken Wilt

born July 11, 1924, passed away suddenly after cardiac surgery on February 21, 2008.Joanie was born in Seattle, just making it across the water in the nick of time, to Maurice R. McMicken and Constance Coleman McMicken. She and her sisters spent their early years between a home on 12th Avenue in Seattle and their Wing Point house. During the depression they moved to the Island year-round and spent many wonderful hours between the beach, the golf course, and the homes of their many friends.Joanie graduated from Forest Ridge Convent, an association that she treasured her entire life. She went on to Lone Mountain College in San Francisco, and then returned to Seattle to finalize her education at the University of Washington, earning a degree in English Literature.Joanie married Sinclair Wilt in 1952 and together they raised a family, played golf at Wing Point Golf Club, went yachting whenever Sinny's schedule would allow, and had legendary family work parties to do the upkeep of their Wing Point property. In between Sinclair's busy schedule and his having to balance the schedules of his obstetric patients, they would dash off to the Oregon coast for golf and beachcombing for agates.Joanie was very involved in her church, St. Cecilia's, Children's Orthopedic Guild, the Arboretum, Wing Point Golf and Country Club and the Wing Point Community. She had many friends in those organizations, as well as the Bainbridge Historical Society. She happily took on the challenge of co-authoring with her daughter the Katy Warner Christmas Fund column for the Bainbridge Review for the past several years.Sometime after Sinclair passed away, Joanie started to work through her grief by forcing herself to do things by herself, such as travel. She enjoyed many wonderful trips to Italy, Spain, the British Isles and finally her last trip was with her two youngest children for a wonderful time in Ireland.As well as being a wonderful cook and avid gardener, she was known through the community for her unending sense of fun and humor, finding laughter in whatever life sent her way. The anesthesiologist that attended her on her cardiac surgery told her daughter that Joanie was joking up to the point where he had to tell her to stop so that he could get her to sleep. She would have a good time with errands to Town & Country, or laughs and botanical discussions at Bay Hay & Feed as well as a long association with running jokes with Junko at Bainbridge Gardens. Those that knew her need no telling the laughter she would milk out of any situation.Joanie was predeceased by her parents, Connie & Mickey, her husband, Sinclair, and an elder sister, Elizabeth Kelley. She is survived by a sister, Alice Koch (Joseph) Bainbridge Island; her children, Edward Douglas Wilt (Nancy) Castle Rock, Colorado; Sinclair McMicken Wilt (Annabelle) Dutch Harbor, Alaska, Sarah Sabrina Wilt (Kurt von Fuchs) Seattle, and Andrew Chilton Wilt (Jesse Mercado) Dallas, Texas. She also leaves her beloved grandchildren, Patrick, Sabrina, Andrea, Colleen, Hallidie and great-grandchildren, Lawsin and Rylan. Joanie was happily anticipating the arrival next summer of her third great-grandchild. She also leaves behind her dear cousins Connie Smith and Ann Bartlett, many nieces and nephews and a wealth of friends. She will be sorely missed.Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Recitation of The Rosary on Friday, February 29, 2008 at 8:00 PM at St. Cecilia Catholic Church 1310 Madison Avenue NE on Bainbridge Island, WA. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at 2:00 PM also at the church. A reception will follow the Mass at Conger Hall at St. Cecilia. Inurnment will be private.The family suggests that any remembrances be made to Children's Hospital, The Bainbridge Historical Society or the Oregon Province of the Jesuits or the Arboretum Foundation.Arrangements entrusted to Cook Family Funeral Home.
