Karl David Smith
September 18, 1958 - November 11, 2018

Karl David Smith, 60, of Thibodaux, Louisiana, passed away surrounded by his family Sunday in Poulsbo, Washington. Born in Lafayette, Indiana he was the son of Marilyn Kintner Smith Blackorby and the late Everet Ernest Smith.

Karl graduated from Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1980 and began his career in Scotland, where he met the love of his life, Kimberley Dale Fetterman, and married in London.

Karl and Kim moved with his career from Aberdeen, Scotland to Texas and Alaska before he settled into a career with the American Bureau of Shipping, working in Oregon, Singapore and Louisiana. Karl's greatest pride was his family. Karl and his wife Kim and son Kostas lived most of their years in Thibodaux, Louisiana where they had many dear friends and neighbors. They took to life on the Bayou, with Kim enjoying her rowing club and Karl enjoying his paddle board. In recent years, they enjoyed their weekends at their condo on General Taylor Street in New Orleans. In addition to their travels while living in Scotland and Singapore, they made many visits to spend time with extended family in Washington and Edmonton, Alberta Canada (Kim's birth place).

Karl took great care of his lifelong friendships, including friends from childhood, to his Buccaneer buddies from Massachusetts Maritime Academy, to his numerous respected colleagues from his career as a Maritime Engineer.

Karl was preceded in death by his wife Kim in 2016. He retired to Poulsbo, Washington in 2017 to be close to family. During his retirement in Poulsbo, Washington, Karl showed great appreciation to all who supported him, including the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, the CHI Franciscan Oncology Clinic in Poulsbo and Hospice Care, and other community support organizations in Poulsbo. He became a member of the North Point Church in Poulsbo. Karl became an endearing community member through his kindness and great sense of humor.

Karl was immensely proud of his son Kostas Smith, who resides in Thibodaux with his wife, Ashlynn Dozar Smith. Karl was bursting with pride during his son's graduation from the Gould School of Law at the University of Southern California in May 2018.

Karl is also survived by his mother, Marilyn Blackorby of Poulsbo; his siblings Bruce Smith (Marcia), Erik Schwarz Smith (Judy), Judy Kitagawa, and Sharon Owen (Mark); and fifteen loving nieces and nephews. He is survived by Kim's family, brother Kris Fetterman (Sally) and sister Tina Herklotz (Andy)and their two children, all residing in Edmonton, Alberta.

A service will be planned for 2019.
