passed away May 8, 2012. Marcy left us the same way she lived, peacefully with grace, and in the company of loved ones.Marcy's pioneer grandmother, Catherine Flynn, arrived in Oregon by covered wagon in 1865. Daniel Patrick Mahoney, her grandfather, stowed away as a child to escape the Irish famine, losing an arm when his ship sank off the coast of Mexico. The Mahoney family owned and operated cigar stores in early Seattle, including one at 1st and Front Street, which burned in the Seattle Fire of 1889. They later moved to Beacon Hill.Born on April 27, 1919, Marcy was the daughter of Daniel A. Mahoney and Margaret Glick. The Glick family arrived from Germany before the American Revolution. After her mother's death, Marcy was raised on Beacon Hill by her grandmother, Catherine. Her father, a railroad engineer, was often away. She attended Holy Names Academy, Franklin High School. After training with a Seattle secretarial school she used her skills in offices. She married Vincent Bohlin and joined him in the Tri-Cities during his Naval service at Hanford in WWII. Her first daughter, Vicky (deceased),was born there with severe disabilities. Post military service they made their home in West Seattle where he was a self-employed carpenter, and they had two loving daughters, Janice Ceridwen (Gordy Johnson) of Hansville, and Debbi Avery (William) of Greenwater. Vince died of cancer in 1956 and Marcy returned with her girls to the family home to live with her aunts, Marcelline Mahoney and Myrtle Cathro.Marcy had the determination, courage, and graciousness of a bygone era. Those who knew her gentle and loving soul were amazed at her strength and bravery as she met many sorrows. Never bitter about fate, she was generous and compassionate to all who knew her. As a self-reliant, hard-working single mother, she had a fierce love for her girls and believed women were equal in all things. Marcy sacrificed to give her girls bountiful life experiences including art and music lessons. A lifelong member of The Office and Professional Employees Union, she was employed for 28 years as an administrative secretary at the District Council of Carpenters, Apprenticeship Program and Local 131. A consummate professional, she was poised and always impeccably dressed. Marcy demonstrated her own pioneer spirit, roughing it in a rustic cabin on Vashon Island without power, water, or phone. She and her children would vacation there each summer, where they enjoyed beachcombing, nature study and she baked wild blackberry pies in a wood stove. In 1972, Marcy married Gordon Hulbert, whom she had written a "Dear John" letter to during the war. They bought a home in West Seattle and also had a berry farm in Colville, WA. A five star cook and baker, she delighted in overfeeding her guests. Gordon preceded her in death in 1991. Marcy's women friends from her fitness classes were a very special part of her life. In her 70's, she learned to cross-country ski and also visited her roots in County Cork, Ireland. At 83 years, Marcy married Vince's brother, Elroy Bohlin, whom she had dated in her 20's. They spent their 80's at his beach house at Point No Point, walking hand in hand on the shore and travelling; even as far as New Zealand. Elroy preceded her in death in 2008. Marcy remained in their beach home until last year with her dear cat, Shadow. A life long advocate for animal welfare, she loved ALL animals, but far above were cats. She was never without a kitty companion. Thank you to the Aegis Community of Edmonds. Under their loving care she was able to find happiness and comfort in each day and allowed to remain the independent dignified person that she was throughout her life. We miss you Beautiful Lady, but see your face in all that is good and kind in this world. Interment with family at Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Please sign Guestbook for the family.
