passed away on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at Hospice of Kitsap County Care Center in Bremerton, Washington. She was born on October 20, 1920 in Lindsey, California, where her father was a pioneer orange grower. She was 90 years of age. Nina received her A.B. degree from Fresno State College, where she majored in language and drama. During World War II, she served with the American Red Cross at Letterman Hospital at the Presidio in San Francisco. She later taught school for eleven years. Her husband, the late Lawrence Echols, was a civil engineer with the National Parks, serving in several national parks in the west and southwest, including Olympic N.P. and Mt. Rainier N.P. They lived on the Island from 1970-1976, after his death, Mrs. Echols returned to the Island in 1987 and built her home. Since then she has been active in Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church, serving as Elder and as a member of the choir. She appeared in many productions with Bainbridge Performing Arts and Island Theatre, as well as doing professional Voice-Overs. She is survived by her daughter, Kerry Messett (Craig Messett) and a son, Nicholas of Porterville, CA, and two grandchildren, Amanda Salanga and Joel Messett. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Memorial Service on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 10 am at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church on Bainbridge Island. Memorial contributions can be made to the music department of Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church, PAWS of Bainbridge Island or The Hospice of Kitsap County.
