passed away on Friday, December 6, 2013 at his home on Bainbridge Island, Washington, surrounded by his family. He was 89 years old. Ott was born on March 10, 1924 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Mason and Margaret Thompson.He served in the Navy in World War II. He was a business graduate of Allegheny College and a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. In 1949 he and Flora Ruth Sheldon were married. They shared their lives together for 64 years. In 1947 Ott began his career with Connecticut General Life Insurance Company in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1959 the family moved to Houston where he became an investment banker for First Mortgage Company. The family moved to Palos Verdes Estates, California in 1968 when Ott became President of Western Mortgage Company. In 1972 he began working as head of investments and real estate for Pacific Life and relocated the family to Laguna Beach. He also served as chairman for Pacific Investment Management Company.During retirement Ott enjoyed tennis, road trips, walking on the beach and playing bridge. He volunteered as a mentor to help inmates successfully transition back into mainstream life. He also served as a board member for PIMCO and enjoyed mentoring young people.In 2004 Ott and Flora moved to Bainbridge Island, Wa where he was a member of Kiwanis and served as elder in his church. He will be remembered as a thoughtful and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.During his career he earned the admiration of coworkers, and made a significant impact in the world of finance and investments. Always a gentleman, he was admired for his dapper attire. Ott was also appreciated for his keen sense of humor, sharp wit, intelligence and warm friendly nature. He had a deep engaging voice and his grandchildren cherished the special times he told stories and read to them. His family valued his guidance and wisdom. Ott was a hard working, loving and generous provider whose family meant everything to him.He leaves a fine legacy of what it is to be a dedicated family man, and he will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife Flora S. Thompson of Bainbridge Island, Wa, children; Nancy T. Robertson of Fremont, Wa, Jeffrey M. Thompson (Annie) of Boerne, Tx, Bruce Thompson (Linda) of New Orleans, La, and Peter S. Thompson (Mary Kay) of Bainbridge Island, Wa. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Lauren Trager (Nat) Ryan Thompson (Alli), Erin Peterson (Nate), Brooke Carter (Eric), Kevin Robertson (Sarah), Scott Robertson, Isabel and Noah Thompson, and six great grand children. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Memorial Service on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Rollingbay Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow. Memorial contributions can be made to the church, Allegheny College in Meadville, PA, the Kiwanis Club of Bainbridge Island and the Bainbridge Island Fire Department.
