Patricia Gold

February 5, 1947 — December 14, 2024

Bainbridge Island

Patricia Gold, 77, (née Boynton), Bainbridge Island, WA, and Kailua-Kona, HI passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 14, 2024, at Hospice House, Tacoma, WA after a long illness. Her husband of 47 years, Stephen M. Gold, was with her when she died.

She leaves behind her twin sister, Pam Sorrow (Jerry) Oconomowoc, WI, and sisters Judy Reynolds (Harold) Stuart, FL, and Sue Viele, who recently lost her husband, Warren, Wethersfield, CT.
She is survived by eight nieces, seven nephews, seven grandnieces, six grandnephews, two great-grandnieces and three great-grandnephews.

Born in Springfield, MA she grew up in Newington, CT, and graduated from Newington High School. In 1978 Pat and Steve moved from Connecticut to Washington, DC for two years and then to Bainbridge Island, WA where they have resided for forty-four years. For more than twenty years they spent half the year in their beloved Hawaii.

Pat held several jobs before concentrating exclusively on her artwork. She was a medical assistant in a doctor’s office, a secretary in an accounting firm, a law firm and a bank. She was a preschool teacher in West Hartford, CT, Arlington, VA, Springfield, VA (in our home) and Seattle. She loved working with the kids and the kids loved her.

Pat was a kind and gentle soul. We left the Daddy Long Leg spiders alone to eat the other insects. If a nasty looking spider appeared she insisted that we capture it in a glass and release it outside.
She was very concerned about Asian and other cultures that ate dog meat. She regularly financially supported an organization in Thailand that worked to stop the practice.

Pat was a creative artist who loved what she did and worked in a variety of media. For several years she designed, glazed, and fired porcelain tiles in a home kiln that she sold at Pike Place Market in Seattle where she was known affectionately as “The Tile Lady.” She was proud of the fact that her tiles were sold to people from all over the world.

Her tiles, paintings, boxwork, porcelain sculptures, jewelry, and other creations were sold at several galleries in Washington and Hawaii. Her designs were also sold online at Zazzle. She was commissioned by a famous Hollywood producer, director, and actor to create four family portraits for their vacation home in the hills above Kona but always told her husband not to brag about it so he will not be named.

A few years before we married we took a one-month trip to Spain and Portugal. We stayed in castles for just a few dollars a night. We recalled the memories of our adventures on that trip for many years.

We travelled to California and Mexico several times including Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta. We travelled to Steve’s hometown, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in the early seventies. In 1975 we went to San Juan, PR and bought a timeshare that we used to trade for trips elsewhere for the next 40 years. On that trip Pat dressed up in a gorgeous outfit Steve bought her on a trip to Sarasota, FL. We went to the classy El San Juan Hotel which was next to the timeshare and gambled in an upscale casino. We laughed when the Black Jack dealer shouted out “Vente Una” when he got 21 followed by “I hate myself, I hate myself.” Pat’s little bit of seed money for gambling lasted late into the next morning. She always remembered that night fondly.

Post retirement we spent several months in Palm Springs and Pacific Beach, CA and Northern Mexico and visited Las Vegas.
In 2006 we went to England, Wales and Scotland for five weeks. Pat considered that the trip of her lifetime.
Shortly after we arrived in the Pacific Northwest we fell in love with the little town of Yachats on the Central Oregon Coast. We have rented a cottage there many summers.
She also loved all of our trips to Orcas Island, WA an island in the San Juan chain.
We went to Vail, Breckenridge, and Aspen, CO several times to see the Aspens turn gold and took side trips to Ouray and Telluride, CO and Jackson Hole, WY.

In the 90’s we went to Kona, Hawaii, and rented a condo for several months for a few years in a row. In the early 2000’s we bought a condo in Kona and spent about a half year there for many years. Pat loved Hawaii. During our years there Pat created many of her pieces with Hawaiian themes.

In 2017 we were staying in the cottage in Yachats when we went to an Indian casino near Florence. Pat had some good luck at the slot machines.
We close with Pat, in life, celebrating her win. (Sound on) https://youtube.com/shorts/9OEb4039Rdo?feature=share
