Patricia, born on October 8, 1938 in Yakima Washington, was the only child of Charles and Sarah (Sally) Burdess, The family moved to Bainbridge Island in the 1940’s. Pat’s mother worked for doctor’s Bourn and Wilt where she became known as the Baby Nurse. She assisted in many of the deliveries on the Island. She was one of the earliest dialysis patients. Sally’s legacy to Patricia was her desire to help others through nursing.
Patricia attended Lincoln Grade School and Bainbridge High School, graduated in 1956. She was elected ASB president 1955-1956. It was unusual for a girl to serve in that capacity. She graduated with honors near the top of her class. Following in her mother’s footsteps she entered the nursing program at the University of Washington. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau and Chi Omega sorority. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from the UW and her RN Degree from Swedish Hospital. After graduation she worked for Swedish Hospital and was awarded Orthopedic Nurse of the Year by her peers. Pat married Keith Alderman, and apple rancher from Tieton and they had two daughters, Crystal L. (Arcand) of Silverdale and Mason S. Alderman of Seattle.
Her interest in helping nursing students give quality care prompted her to enroll in the Master’s program at the University of Washington. She taught for many years in the associate degree nursing programs at Yakima Valley College, Everett Community College, Olympic College, and Bellevue Community College. Pat retired in 1995 due to Parkinson’s Disease. Pat married her high school sweetheart, Jim Jones in 1998, he passed away in 2000. She lived with her daughter Crystal, son-in-law Andy and grandkids Drew and Michael who provided her with loving care. Drew and his wife Christi welcomed Pat’s Great Grandson Noah in 2021, which gave her great joy.
Her ashes will be placed at Kane’s Cemetery in Bainbridge Island. Her final resting place next to her sweetheart Jim.
