Patricia Young Sampson

Patricia Young Sampson, 79, was born Patricia Webster Young on August 12, 1942, in Los Angeles, CA.
Pat passed away at home in Bainbridge Island, WA on January 7, 2022. Pat and her husband Dean
moved to Seattle in 1969 and they have lived in Bainbridge Island for 14 years. Pat and Dean celebrated
their 56th anniversary in September 2021.

Pat is survived by her husband Dean and sons Greg Sampson and Marq de Soncoeur; her brother Buzz
Young and his wife Tracy; her brother-in-law Mark Brandjord and nieces Annie and Emily Brandjord; and
her sisters-in-law Barbara Sampson and Patty Sampson. She was preceded in death by her sister Debbie
Brandjord and her parents Robert and Ann Young.

Pat graduated from the University of Oregon in 1964, majoring in history and literature. Pat remained an
lifelong avid Duck fan (Go Ducks!!). While at U of O, Pat was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority.

In the mid-70’s, Pat obtained a paralegal certificate which led to her employment at Rainier Bank
Leasing, as a contract administrator. She was subsequently hired by Safeco Insurance to start up a “small
ticket” leasing operation in the Safeco Credit branch. She stayed with Safeco until her retirement in
1995 as a vice-president in Safeco Credit. Pat then started her second career volunteering, initially at
Planned Parenthood, then at Literacy Source, where she was subsequently hired to plan and lead their
fund-raising efforts. She and Dean moved to Bainbridge Island in 2008 where she became a regular
volunteer at Helpline House. In 1992, Pat and Dean formed a small contracting company, specializing in
refurbishing and remodeling vintage Seattle homes. She excelled in selecting materials, doing the
interior design work and often actively investing sweat equity in many of the projects. Two of those
projects were remodeling their first floating home on Portage Bay then completely rebuilding their next
floating home on Lake Union “from the logs up”.

Pat loved to travel, and after her junior year at the UO, she and a close friend spent the summer
traveling throughout Europe, primarily by Eur-rail Pass. Pat and Dean’s travel adventures included
cruising the canals of France and the Netherlands, exploring England, Scotland and Switzerland by car,
spending a week in the Amazon jungle in Peru, canoeing a 90 mile stretch of the wild and scenic
Missouri river (twice), rafting down the Colorado River the full length of the Grand Canyon, sailing and
exploring the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas, two trans-continental road trips, a week in Cabo Mexico, a
week in Canada’s Maritime Provinces and, of course, many winter-time Hawaiian vacations.

Pat lived an active life. She loved the outdoors, taking advantage of our wonderful NW to participate in
hiking, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, biking, kayaking, camping, walking half-marathons and beach
combing. Pat and Dean were active boaters for more than 45 years. Pat was an avid reader and was an
active member of two book groups.

The family would like to thank Virginia Mason’s Dr. David Aboulafia and Dr. Catherine Edwards for their
on-going compassionate care and support and we would like to extend a special thanks to the entire
staff at the Virginia Mason Outpatient Infusion Center for their continued excellent service over the four
year duration of Pat’s treatment for aplastic anemia. The family would also like to recognize the
essential role played by Bloodworks Northwest which provided literally hundreds of units of blood
products to sustain Pat in her treatment combatting this disease. Charitable donations (or being a blood
donor) can be made to Bloodworks Northwest.
