Richard Stephen Wilson

January 24, 1952 — January 24, 2025

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Stephen Wilson on January 24, at the age of 73.

Stephen was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on January 24, 1952. He received his Bachelor of Science degree at Queen’s University, Belfast, and a Master of Science degree in Petroleum Geology from Imperial College, London. He worked in the oil exploration, storage, and distribution industry, taking him around the world to the Middle East, West Africa, and Central America. In 1984 he moved to the United States for a new role in a marine transport company (Crowley Maritime), responsible for safety and environmental compliance on the West Coast.

It was in 1984 that he met the love of his life, Sherri, in California. They married in 1986, then moved to Bainbridge Island Washington in 1992. In 1997 they welcomed their first daughter, Ailish, and in 2003 welcomed their younger daughter Mei.

Stephen had a great love for Eagle Harbor Congregational church, fulfilling many roles there. He was quick to volunteer and slow to take credit. Sherri and he first traveled to Kenya in 2018. Stephen felt an immediate emotional and spiritual connection with the people, the wildlife, and the environment. They made repeat visits thereafter, making lasting friendships with the Maasai community in the Mara. He helped to form a non-profit foundation (Ushirika Foundation) that raises money for Maasai community development projects and conservation, especially focused on Kenyan schools.

He was an unfailingly devoted, supportive, and steady presence in the lives of his daughters. He loved all animals, but especially those that shared our home (many dogs, cats, chickens). He was especially fond of his horse, BeauD, finding great joy in his visits to see him on the farm.

Stephen is survived by his wife, Sherri, his daughters Ailish and Mei, extended family in Northern Ireland (Margaret, Sara, Kate, Ben, and their families), and his in-laws in the States (Terri, Toni and their families).

He was preceded in death by his mother Joan and father Robert, as well as his beloved older brother David.

In lieu of flowers, please send cards to the family with a remembrance of how Stephen touched your life. Donations would be gratefully accepted at the Ushirika Foundation.

Stargaze often, love fiercely, and enjoy a strawberry milkshake. Kwaheri

Arrangements are entrusted to Cook Family Funeral Home of Bainbridge Island, WA
