Robert “Bo” William Last January 17, 1940 - April 1, 2023
On April 1, 2023, long-time Bainbridge Island resident Robert William Last, 83, entered eternal rest. Robert (affectionately known as "Bo") passed peacefully surrounded by his family at St. Michael Medical Center in Silverdale, WA.
He was born January 17th, 1940 in Albion, New York to the late Robert S. Last and Doris Angarano, the first child of seven. "Bobby" was the big brother to the late Norman Last, and sister, Sharlene LaManna; his brother David Last (New York), and sisters Edith Borza, Patricia Nodecker and Linda Killenbeck (Florida). He spent his childhood in upstate New York. He served in the United States Army as a tank driver while stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii in 1956.
In 1971, his daughter Samantha Ilene Last was born. In 1972, Bo embarked on one of the most important achievements during his life: raising Samantha as a single father. He was also father to Theresa Ann Bruski, born in 1964, whom he was joyously reunited with in 2019.
Bo owned "Bob's Mobile Service and Gas Station" in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He then went to culinary school and opened "Bo's Place" diner in Fort Myers, FL and later retired from the Hilton Hawaiian Village as executive chef in 2000. Upon moving to Kitsap county, he was the chef at Harbour Public House on Bainbridge Island for several years.
Bo married Keiko "Lani" Kawasaki June 4, 2001 and they were married for 22 years. They moved to Bainbridge Island in 2002 where they became active community members. They adopted his beloved son, Bailey, from Beijing, China, in 2013 who became his pride and joy.
He enjoyed participating in Boy Scouts and going fishing with him. Bo and Lani had many wonderful adventures together and he loved her dearly.
Bo was a volunteer member of many civic and community organizations and spent much of his life in service to others. This includes Youth Ministries at Estero Baptist Church, Estero, FL, Waikiki Neighborhood Board, Waikiki Beach Clean Up (W.O.W.), St. Francis Assisi “Celtic House”, Honolulu, Hawaii, Bainbridge Island Senior Center and Bainbridge Rotary Auction in Bainbridge Island, Washington. He and Lani also began feeding and caring for those in need in Occidental Park in Seattle, WA.
Bo loved fishing, caring for animals, gardening, carpentry, classic cars and was a talented artist. He loved music, particularly Elvis and Johnny Cash. He traveled to many countries across Asia and Europe. Most of all he loved cooking for everyone.
Bo was preceded in death by his father, Robert S. Last, his mother, Doris Angarano, his step-father Camilio "Tommy" Angarano, brother, Norman Last and sister, Sharlene LaManna and son, Bobby.
He is survived by his wife Keiko "Lani" Kawasaki and son Bailey Kawasaki of Bainbridge Island, WA, a daughter Samantha (Last) Rice of Bremerton,WA, a daughter Theresa Bruski of Mechanicsville, VA and his chosen son, Allen Truhn of Kingston, WA; four grandchildren, two chosen grandchildren, and a great grandchild as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bainbridge Island Senior Center on Sunday, April 30, 2023 , 2:00-5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation in Bo's name be made to World Central Kitchen (www.wck.org).
Arrangements are entrusted to the Cook Family Funeral Home of Bainbridge Island.
