known by many as Sally, passed away on July 22, 2013 at her home on Bainbridge Island.Born in July, 1916 to Sterne and Margaret Gartrell in Chicago, IL; grew up in Kansas City, MO, where she met and later married James Lamar McMullen (Mac) in 1940. In 1954 they moved to Sunnyvale, CA and lived there until 1974.Sarah was a gracious, loving mother and friend. She was an active Girl Scout leader in Kansas City and Sunnyvale from 1953 to 1959. Sarah believed in fairness for and the advancement of all people. She instilled self confidence in her children. She was employed at the Stanford University Bookstore from 1960 to 1974, before retiring with Mac to Cassville, MO. Sarah was an avid reader and acquired an extensive library; she had a great appreciation of the arts and in the last 23 years of her life bought and renovated old houses. She survived breast cancer at the age of 58 and lived an active and intellectually engaging life to her final days.After Mr. McMullen's death in 1990 she lived in Salt Lake City and Provo, UT and Astoria, OR before moving to Bainbridge Island.She is survived by her son Sterne Hayward McMullen & wife Kathleen of Bainbridge Island, daughter Linda Steinberg & husband John of Indianola, grandsons Matthew J Platt and wife Sarah Jane of Salt Lake City and Patrick McMullen of Portland, OR. She has four great-grandchildren; Spencer Brown, Vanjer, Orion and Preston Platt, all of Salt Lake City.A family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, send memorial donations in Sarah's name to Habitat for Humanity or Girl Scouts of America.
