Terrea Dodge O'Rand Zumeta

December 5, 1950 — July 6, 2020

Terrea Dodge O’Rand Zumeta (12/5/1950 to 7/6/2020) passed away near Seattle, WA surrounded by her children following a brief illness. She grew up in Rancho Santa Fe, CA and attended San Diego State University where she earned her BS in Nursing in 1974. Terrea lived and worked in Berkeley, Vancouver (British Columbia), Los Angeles, and the Seattle area throughout her 35-year nursing career. She cared for patients from birth to death across specialties including medical-surgical nursing, cardiac care, postpartum, psychiatry, and memory support for individuals with dementia. Terrea could be vivacious, generous, and at times irreverent. She loved her family, gardening, Mexican food, the beach in Puerto Vallarta, and power ballads by Whitney Houston.

Terrea was funny and spontaneous—she showed her children that laughing and making others laugh can help them find joy and companionship despite challenges. As a nurse in psychiatric and geropsychiatric care, one of her greatest skills was her ability to empathize with her patients and roll with whatever perception of reality they had. Her ability to “yes-and” with her patients’, and children’s, imaginations was a true gift.

Although she never thought of herself as an intellectual, Terrea was incredibly smart, sharp-witted, and knowledgeable about what she found important. She went through a lot during her career as a nurse, surviving several harrowing experiences due to her selflessness and skill with difficult patients.  She often volunteered to take on the toughest cases because she knew that they deserved the best care and that she would provide it despite the risk or extraordinary effort it took.

Terrea is survived by her children Rebecca, Benjamin, and Brian, grandchildren Jack, Ellis, and Lucian, her former husband Bill, and her siblings Sharon and Michael. Her family members would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to her primary caregiver, Sherry, medical providers, and the staff at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton, WA for the support and care they provided. They treated her with great patience and humanity and were a source of much comfort.
