Tom, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on October 2, 2024. Born on September 15, 1926, in Evanston, Illinois, he was the eldest of three children of Joseph Edward Caps and Alberta Stevenson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his two younger sisters, Jackie and Nancy. Tom was a man of many qualities — sharp-witted, fiercely intelligent, and always ready for a good debate. His contrarian nature made him a force to be reckoned with, as he never shied away from a challenge or an argument. He loved the debate itself, but even more, he loved winning it. Whether it was a casual discussion or a deeply philosophical exchange, Tom found joy in questioning the status quo and making others think in new ways.
Tom’s early years were spent in Evanston, where he attended St. George’s, an all-boys Catholic school. As a teenager, Tom’s family relocated to California, where he completed his high school education and went on to attend UCLA. At UCLA, Tom excelled academically and forged lifelong friendships, particularly through his involvement in his fraternity. These friendships would grow to include his law partners, business associates, and neighbors, who became some of his closest companions throughout his life.
During World War II, Tom enlisted in the United States Navy. His service provided him with the financial support to attend law school and sparked his lifelong passion for travel. After graduating at the top of his class from UCLA's law school, Tom embarked on a distinguished legal career. He became a founding partner at the law firm Riordan, Caps, Carbone, and McKenzie. Throughout his career, Tom earned the respect of his peers and clients for his legal expertise and the depth and breadth of his knowledge
Tom had four children: John, Mike, Jackie, and Julie. Over the years, he was blessed with 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy. After the passing of his sister Jackie, Tom made it a priority to nurture his relationships with his nieces and nephews. He loved combining travel with visits to family members and showed up for many important events in the lives of his extended family.
In 1982, at the age of 56, Tom retired from his successful legal career. He and his wife, Sue, moved to St. Thomas, where they created a welcoming home for family and friends. Later, in 1989, they moved to Bainbridge Island, Washington, where they made their home for the past 35 years.
Tom was deeply committed to his family and was an active member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church. He had a passion for traveling, and along with Sue, they embarked on many unforgettable journeys together. They created lasting memories with friends and family.
A lifelong learner, Tom possessed a photographic memory and a deep curiosity about history and geography. His sharp intellect and competitive spirit were on full display during frequent games of bridge, backgammon, and hearts, where his quick wit and strategic mind made him a formidable opponent. His infectious sense of humor, laughter, and storytelling left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. Those closest to Tom will remember him for his integrity, wisdom, and boundless generosity. He had a profound influence on his family, his friends, and everyone who had the privilege of crossing his path. His legacy is one of deep love for his family, a lifelong dedication to learning, and his love for a good debate with anyone willing to engage. May he rest in peace.
