Thomas H Chaffey

September 30, 1932 — October 29, 2023

Tom was born in Hoquiam Washington to Thomas Prescott and Bernice (Florence) Chaffey. Two brothers were added and together there were many adventures. The family moved to Aberdeen where Tom graduated Weatherwax High School in 1951. The same year Tom joined the U.S. Navy as an Interior Communications Electrician serving until 1955. Next, Tom attended the University of Washington where he met and married Louise Jamison in 1958 and together they raised 3 children; Sharon, Mike and Renee. The young family lived in Seattle, Colville, Centralia and lastly Port Orchard. During this time he finished a Bachelor Degree from Evergreen State College and tried his hand at making wine, beer and root beer; also baking French bread, cinnamon rolls and lasagna. Tom made a list of his many jobs including Counselor and Home Builder but he said his favorite was a Home Inspector for local Banks. Throughout his life he loved to try new things, appreciated beauty and expensive items, listened to all kinds of music and was a voracious reader. He had many hobbies including photography, drawing, painting, wood carving, gardening, fishing, hiking, skiing and traveling. Tom was a “foodie” and also had a real sweet tooth, his favorite being See’s Candy. He loved lunches with his Mom and family, getting together with friends and his long time card group. Most would agree he loved conversation, telling jokes and stories and a little gossip. His family affectionately called him “Grandpa Potty Mouth”. Later in life he was entertained by his special animal companions Peppy and Jazzy. Tom also spent time volunteering for the Kitsap Humane Society, Kitsap Juvenile Court and YMCA Alive Program helping domestic violence victims and children.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers; Herbert Duncan Chaffey and John Dewey “Jack” Chaffey, son Michael Patrick Chaffey and nephew David Chaffey. He is survived by his daughters; Sharon (Matt) Mallory and Renee (Jon) Akers and daughter-in-law Suong Chaffey. Also, he is survived by grandchildren: Nic (Siri) Dammarell, Kyle (Brandie) Mallory, Blake (Sara) Mallory, James Chaffey, Jennifer (Caleb) Freed, Jordan Akers and Janelle Akers along with 8 great-grandchildren; Ayla, Synnove, Cullan, Mason, Olena, Taylor, Brooke and Benjamin. Tom also preceded his sister-in-laws: Eunice Chaffey and Ruthie Chaffey as well his niece Susan and nephews Bob, Rick and Jason.

As per his wishes Tom was cremated; Sharon and Renee scattered the ashes on Crystal Mountain and his family got together for a Memorial Luncheon.
