Thomas (Tom) Patrick Hume was born in Pasadena, CA on Aug 24, 1944. He died on Memorial Day, May 25, 2020 at age 75. He lost his life due to the complications of cancer treatment.
He is survived by his son, Aldous Hume, daughter-in-law, Sara Keehfus, and grandson Alister Hume of Manhattan NV. Tom was the oldest of five adoring siblings, Kathy, Mike, Patty and David, who survived him, as well as seven nieces and nephews.
Tom grew up in the proximity of his enduring love, the Pacific Ocean. Abandoning the dinosauria and science-fiction passions of his childhood, as a teen he was attracted to diving and even made his own wet suit. He spent week-ends exploring off-shore undersea gardens including the fabled Laguna Beach, a Mecca for him. Surfing became the modus operandi of his life. When he could no longer surf, he watched surfing competitions online delighting in the big waves and the skill of the riders. He recently constructed a cedar long board.
In 1984 Tom left the growing congestion of Southern CA and moved to Bainbridge Island with his wife, Sharon Engle and their son. When Aldous was grown, Tom and Sharon parted ways to pursue their own interests.
Eventually Tom met Susan Brown. They had much in common and shared a full, rich, life together until his death.
As an artisan, master woodworker, philosopher, raconteur, with deep philosophical ruminations, Tom led a lifelong quest to explore human nature and cross-cultural spiritual practices. He made many deep connections along the way.
Once he moved to the NW he continued doing custom intarsia inlayed in wood and tile. His art, always inspired by nature, was now influenced by images of the Northwest Coast.
His work lives on and can be found throughout many private homes and businesses. A kind, sincere, compassionate, bright, witty, ever-curious man, he leaves behind many stories as well as fascinating, unique and beloved memories.
A memorial celebration is postponed due to Covid 19
