On July 20, 2024, Warren Donnell Bucy, loving, devoted husband to Susan Mary Coles and faithful father to 4 sons, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 at the family beach cabin on Agate Pass. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Warren was born in Seattle on May 23, 1933, to Roy T. and Mabel D. Bucy. Growing up in a military family, he spent his childhood traveling between Seattle, Alaska and Maryland. Due to all of the travel, his best friend was his older sister Barbara, and they were inseparable.
After graduating from Anne Arundel High School in Maryland in 1951, Warren entered the United States Marine Corps in 1952. He served his country during the Korean War. Upon return to the U.S. in 1955, he attended the University of Washington and joined The Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta. He became a diehard UW Husky football fan and was loyal to the Purple and Gold for life. He graduated from the University with a business degree. While at university, he met the love of his life, Susan. They were wed in 1958 and began an adventurous life in the Pacific Northwest.
Warren worked for The Boeing Company as a financial analyst. After retirement, he continued his business career as a tax preparer for H&R Block for many years.
Raising a family of 4 boys (Stephen, John, Michael, Patrick) with Susan on Mercer Island became an adventure in itself as Warren participated in supporting the boys’ athletic growth in running, baseball, snow skiing, and water sports.
Always an athlete, Warren relished the opportunities that this region offered. Running, pickleball, windsurfing, fastpitch softball and skiing in the local mountains were some of the activities with which he chose to spend his free time. He also summited Mount Rainer twice - once with Susan.
For more than 15 years, Warren was the stadium announcer at Mercer Island High School football games and became known as “The Voice of the Islanders.”
Warren went on worldwide travels with Susan, seeing the sights of the U.S. National Parks, the Mediterranean, Europe, the Islands of the Caribbean, China and the Far East.
His tastes also leaned towards the arts. For many years, Warren was a stage supernumerary for the Pacific Northwest Ballet. He was known for his performance as the ‘drunken uncle’ at the Christmas party in “The Nutcracker.” Due to his success on stage with the PNB, he was offered opportunities with the Seattle Opera, which inspired him to learn Italian so that he could follow the singing while on stage. Warren’s career highlight at the Opera was when he was cast in the role as the Cardinal in "Dialogues des Carmélites" (1990). Because of his dramatic features, Seattle Opera used his image for their performance promotional campaign and the following year’s subscription run.
Warren was a man of faith who supported St. Monica’s Catholic Church. He was an example to his sons on what it meant to be Catholic in his daily life and actions.
Warren is survived by his wife Susan, his sons Stephen (Megan), John (Barbara), Michael (Marit) and Patrick. His continuing legacy of 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren will carry on his adventurous spirit.
The Mass of the Resurrection for Warren will be at St. Monica’s Catholic Church on Mercer Island on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at 11:00. An open viewing and the Rosary will be 35 minutes prior to the Mass.
