William C. Evans

d. October 24, 2013

born on November 17, 1938, died October 24, 2013.Bill was born to Dr. Vernon and Anne Evans in Aurora, Illinois. Upon graduation from Northern Illinois University he served as a Lieutenant in the Navy on the USS Mountrail for two years then ashore in Vietnam. He was proud of his Navy service and always said every young American should serve his or her country in some uniformed/disciplined/communal capacity for a few years. He met the love of his life, Lin Min Huan (Randi), on a flight between Hong Kong and Taipei and is now survived by her and their two sons, Edward, a businessman in Florida and Benjamin, a Science teacher in Seattle, plus six grandchildren.Bill lived nearly half his life in Asia and grew to love and respect its many cultures and peoples. But when he and Randi finally moved to Bainbridge Island, they knew they were really home.Bill was a member of the Rotary Club and American Club of Hong Kong plus various other social clubs. He volunteered with a variety of organization, his favorite being the National Park Service. His favorite pastime was hiking the hills and mountains wherever and whenever he could. He was an avid reader, student and frustrated writer. Beginning at age 16 Bill held a long list of jobs. For the last thirty plus years of his working life he lived in Asia where he introduced and sold hundreds of American consumer products. He always joked that he did his part to stem the "gold flow" from the USA. Not such a bad life's work.Bill was usually in a hurry and his two favorite quotes were a Russian one: "He who is late will be punished by life"; and a Jewish one: "Too soon old, too late smart." He learned to slow down later in life and enjoyed the flowers, birds, trees and four footed critters in the Olympic Mountains.Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visitation on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 from 5-7 pm at St. Cecilia Catholic Church on Bainbridge Island. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at 10:00 AM also at the church. A reception will follow at the family home.
