Seafaring “Captain Bill” Maier has set sail on heavenly seas. Declining in health, he passed away on June 22 nd in the home he dearly treasured. Born in Seattle on March 10 th , 1950, Bill grew up in a loving home to parents, Markee and Sheldon, with sister, Linda, and brother, Dave. He was a 1968 graduate of Nathan Hale High School and briefly attended the University of Washington. Bill spent summers at the family’s historic log-cabin beach house that was built on Rolling Bay Beach Walk, Bainbridge Island in 1906 by his maternal great-grandparents. Idyllic and wild childhood summers at the beach and in the seas around Bainbridge captivated the Pisces in Bill who continued to spend his life and career on the water. From exploring Puget Sound on his sailboat, he went on to work for several years as the chef and captain of the 65’ sailing ketch, Viajero, and the captain of the 76’ sailing schooner, Teragram in Maui, Hawaii. He then purchased and skippered the Sunset, a commercial long-line fishing troller, along the SE Alaskan coast. Bill ventured back to Bainbridge and worked for Town & Country Market in Winslow and loved farming and gardening. He retired to his cherished summer home overlooking the waves of Rolling Bay beach. His family, friends and neighbors will remember him for his fun 4 th of July summer dock parties, savant-like nautical navigational skills, resourceful “jack-of-all-trades” intelligence, and mostly his incredibly kind and caring spirit. His Rolling Bay beach neighbors and friends aptly nicknamed him “The Mayor [Maier] of Rolling Bay.” His departure is gravely felt by his family and community.
